Do I need bonsai experience?
No. Members range from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. Our meetings include informal time specifically for questions and one-on-one guidance.
What age do I need to be?
Meetings are open to adults and children ages 12 and up. Younger attendees should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
What if I don't have a tree?
No tree needed to attend. Many members started by observing, asking questions, and learning before acquiring their first tree. You're welcome to simply come and learn.
Is there a cost to attend meetings?
Meetings are completely free. You're welcome to attend as a guest as many times as you like before deciding to become a member.
How much are annual dues?
Annual dues are $40 per year. Dues help support guest artist programs, show materials, and club operations. Contact us at great.swampbonsai@gmail.com with any questions.
Can I bring my kids?
Yes - children ages 12 and up are welcome at all meetings and events. It's a great way to introduce young people to the art of bonsai.
What should I bring to a meeting?
Bring a tree (or trees) for display, discussion, or to work on, along with your tools if you plan to do any hands-on work. Don't have a tree yet? No problem - come and observe. Members also enjoy when newcomers bring questions and enthusiasm.
Are there workshops with guest artists?
Yes. GSBS regularly hosts international guest artists for afternoon workshops (typically $50, bring your own tree) followed by an evening lecture-demonstration that is free to all. We have hosted over 35 guest artists from the US, UK, Italy, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Belgium, Puerto Rico, Canada, South Africa, and Thailand.
Is there a sales table at meetings?
Yes. Members can bring bonsai-related items (trees, pots, tools, books, magazines) to sell at our meetings. It's a non-commercial way for members to pass along items to fellow enthusiasts at fair prices.
Drop in to any meeting as a guest, or reach out with questions. We'd love to welcome you to the club.
